Do you think the criticism of this plan as being “too gold-plated” is fair? I’m not familiar with the area, so I’m not sure if light rail is really needed.
The idea that a city doesn’t need light rail is laughable.
Do we need it to these areas though? Is it worth the cost?
Yeah, the shore already has wider motorway lanes and a dedicated busway, they shouldn’t get light rail as well. What about dominion road light rail? Less promises more delivery please.
Yeah, that does seem strange to me. Perhaps they’re thinking this will result in new subdivisions being built?
Why shouldn’t we get a gold plated public transportation system?
Of course Auckland needs a light rail system. Have you heard people complain about the traffic?
I was in Akl a couple of months ago for work. The traffic was unbearable, and that’s even compared to some much larger cities I’ve live in overseas.
It’s bad but It’s not unbearable compared to the large cities I have been to. Tokyo, NY, LA, (or most big cities in the USA), or even Melbourne have much worse traffic. I once sat in traffic for more than two hours in NY.
The problem I find is things are relatively spread out in Akl compared to many big cities. Yes, LA and NY are bad I agree. Tokyo is very convenient, and you never have to travel very far most of the time. That, combined with fantastic public transport, makes it much more livable.
I guess I should have said that it’s bad for New Zealand, and I’m that context seems worse than elsewhere. When I was in Asia bad traffic was a given, so it didn’t stand out - it is just part of city life, and you plan around it.
Most big cities do have public transport but I have been stuck on trams in Melbourne before during rush hour.
I’ll admit I have only spent a little time in Melbourne.
