Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So how’s it going?

It’s going well, nice cold Sunday in Wellington.

Going to finally hit up Ricks Cheesesteaks at Willis Lane, the locals in Welly might know Rick from Soul Shack and he’s moved on to a new food venture.

Other than that, probably spend most of the day gaming!

Let us know how it is!

How come I can’t find anything about it? Searching Google Maps for Ricks Cheesesteaks takes me to the USA 🙁

I’m working on a new and more ambitious Canvas (Lemmy r/place) project. I’ve posted a template in the other post for anyone who wants to help: https://lemmy.nz/post/745366

In the settings you can paste the template URL and set the position and opacity to make it easier.

This is supposed to be a direct link to my comment but the website isn’t working well at the moment, should work for apps though: https://lemmy.nz/comment/1460679

I was intending to play some Baldurs Gate 3 this morning, but have ended up placing pixels instead. The 30 sec cooldown has been juuust short enough that I’m not getting bored.

Yep and the stacking of pixels when you get distracted is great too!

Went to the dump shop when we did a green waste run at lunchtime, and scored a vintage box of recipes for the princely sum of $4. There are a bunch of handwritten ones tucked away at the back but I’m looking forward to trying such traditional cooking methods as starting with a cup of lard for everything.

I was having a conversation about cooking with someone yesterday. I was saying it’s easy to make food taste good. Just follow someone else’s recipe. But they key part is when it tells you to add salt or butter, double whatever they say.

That might not apply if using old time cook books when people didn’t care about their health.

Also applies to garlic. 1 or 2 cloves? Throw half a bulb in. And go to an asian supermarket and get a big bag of MSG. Makes so many dishes better.

We have a recipe that calls for half of a clove of garlic. What is this, a recipe for vampires? If I’m making a dish big enough to feed multiple people, there is no way half a clove will get you anywhere near close to the right amount.

Haha! How many is the recipe supposed to serve?

Hmm I’m not at home right now. We got it from someone else but I think it was originally a Bargain Box recipe. Probably was designed for 2 or 3 people.

My assumption is they designed a 6 person recipe, then just halved it for the smaller size.

Even so… a single clove of garlic for 6 people?? I’m imagining portioning out a clove into six slices for each person… they must not like flavour 😂

It’s crazy! If you don’t like garlic don’t put it in! None of this half a clove nonsense.

Yeah, healthy dishes is actually a very tiny separate section at the end and appears to be all stirfrys. Mostly, I’m a little concerned at how many of the desserts require alcohol but I’m nothing if not curious so I’ll be buying my first ever bottle of brandy next week.

We have a bottle of brandy in the cupboard! Not sure who left it at out house, we tried drinking it but it turns out brandy isn’t our thing. I’ll have to research some brandy deserts, thanks for the idea!

Just watched - A I Artificial Intelligence movie. Had never seen it before, but given the current AI everywhere thing, thought it worth a look. For a 2001 movie, a lot of concepts and ideas are now very relevant these days.

It’s a good movie. The idea of sapient AI has been around in science fiction books for a long time. The question of whether they should be afforded the same rights as humans will be an interesting topic as AI develops. We barely seem capable of giving the same rights to other humans sometimes though…

It’s kind of cheesy, but another one I liked from around that time was the Robin Williams movie Bicentennial Man. I can also recommend the game Detroit: Become Human for similar topics.

Have you seen the trailer for The Creator?

Thanks for the Bicentennial Man prompt, will watch that tomorrow.

Again thanks, I’ll also keep a lookout for The Creator.

I guess the $64,000 question is, how will it end?

It’s not as dark or serious as AI and has a bit of a family movie feel to it, but the overall journey of the main character is interesting. It’s based on an old book by Isaac Asimov.

If I had my way we’d end up a post-scarcity society living alongside hyper intelligent AI like The Culture in the Iain M. Banks books.

Take the little man out, buy him an ice cream, bring him back - job done. Then start playing…
