Let’s say some of us would like to donate money to the Lemmy developers, and we’d like to make sure as much as possible goes to said developers, which would be the best donation platform to do so?

If the developers read this - aside from the above - is there one you prefer over the other for some reason?

(Yea, sending them money directly through crypto is probably the best to ensure they get the most out of it, but many of us prefer the comfort of those donation platforms.)

I remember reading that they prefer you donate via Liberapay. Idk why that is, but that’s what I did. Back when I first donated they were only getting $38 per week.

    https://liberapay.com/Lemmy/donate

There is also a patreon and an opencollective donation link somewhere.

The link to all three donation platforms they support/use is linked from the donation page that I linked in this post.

I’ve had a closer look at Liberapay after whay you said. It seems they don’t take any cut at all. Liberapay itself is funded through donations. However, there are of course fees for the payment processor.

They also seem to accept several currencies, now I wonder which of these results in the most money in the devs pockets. The default seems to be USD, so maybe that? But could be the default because most people will prefer paying in USD.

Edit: hm, seems one of the two gets their payout in USD, the other in EUR…so I guess these are the currencies that work best.

        To answer my questions:

        • according to the payment receipt, EUR were converted to USD (at 1.085)
        • for EUR 10, the processing fees were $0.78, so $10.07 was paid out.

So switching to USD from next month.

Nice, thanks for sharing. I’m considering running an instance and was wondering if/how I could get help funding it. Just gotta see if it works with Korean banks… probably not, but maybe it’s an opportunity for open source contribution

I also used LiberaPay to donate, and I also prefer it for it being free and opensource platform and it is a not-for-profit organization.

LiberaPay takes nothing from donations, and while you can’t run away from transaction fees, they incentivize grouping monthly donations into bigger timespans to reduce “waste” on fees.
Afaik OpenCollective doesn’t take any cut either, but I’m not sure.
