A man was rescued from the roof of his car after it got stuck in a flooded Canterbury river amid continued heavy rain in the region.

Protip: do not attempt to ford a river when there is heavy flooding.

And, when the rescue staff are on their way to get you, do not unexpectedly leap off the roof of your car into the water like this clown apparently did.

I wonder what makes people try this? Underestimated the depth, overestimated what their vehicle is capable of, just didn’t appreciate the power the water has? It’s a global phenomenon, the states even has specific laws regarding driving around barricades and into floodwater.

The Rufford lane ford is a great example of this.

Is that some local knowledge? The article doesn’t seem to mention this as far as I can tell. Just that he was on the roof when they arrived, then they pulled him out of the water.

Michael Harvey, a station officer based in Wigram, Christchurch, said the man jumped from the roof and was swept downstream in the swollen Hawkins River near Darfield about 10.30pm on Sunday.

      It’s in the article.

Reading the article again now… I don’t think that’s the article I read to start with. It looks like it’s been updated with significantly more information.
