Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

Just had a home delivery from New World. One of the items we ordered a week ago at a price of $12.99 was delivered at $19.99.

Called up their “help line” to be told that because we had added another item to the order midweek, the original price would have been updated to that days item price.

I bet if the price had gone down it wouldn’t have been changed!!

And they wonder why people hate the duopoly.

No they actually do update the whole “basket” to the day’s prices, it’s a trap to beware of if you’re like me and the basket is mostly things on special. A couple of things might go down but most go up. All the supermarkets do this.

I don’t believe Countdown does this. Have used them for years and never had that happen. We also buy a lot on “special”, including wine and beer where a change like we saw would be obvious.

Normally people schedule delivery for within a week or so of shopping, meaning the same specials are usually still running when you amend your basket.

I had to use Countdown delivery right through all the lockdowns as they were the only supermarket delivering in our area. There was often a much longer wait between order and delivery slot as it would totally book out.

I’m pretty confident this exact phenomenon happened to me several times during that period, to the point where we would check changes to specials before deciding whether to edit the order, but ymmv.

Done some checking and Countdown does not change the item price at the time of delivery, the customers pays the price shown at the time of order. We’ve been using them online for a very long time pre-Covid and have never seen a price rise on a delivered item after placing an order.

I think maybe you don’t understand what I’m saying to you. I totally agree with this and was not disputing it:

does not change the item price at the time of delivery, the customers pays the price shown at the time of order.

This is in their TOS and I don’t think anyone would order from them if they randomly changed prices.

When you amend an order, the time of amendment becomes the time of order, just like at the other supermarkets:

because we had added another item to the order midweek, the original price would have been updated to that days item price.

Makes sense as business practice, otherwise people could schedule for 2 weeks away and wait to add more specials later that do not run concurrently.

I only brought it up because after you had that experience, you thought it only ever revised upwards and I wanted to reassure you it revises downwards as well.

Anyway, it’s all good. Don’t know why I’m defending/explaining Countdown or NW to you. I don’t much like them.

Countdown does actually update prices and also lets you choose new items if what you previously ordered is out of stock when you go to add to an existing order. It gives you a big warning whenever you go to edit an order.
