    The problem is trying to reduce all opinions to a single dimension.

    It should at least be 3: social freedoms, economic freedoms, authority structure.

    Though even that would be an oversimplification.

      I remember when the right were the debate bros up to the later phases of gamergate - it was all “facts don’t care about your feelings” until people started pointing out the facts… It was about that time that the right went from questionably sane arseholes to full blown conspiracist mental illness.

      There’s a 19th century British politician who made a great quote about that, something along the lines of “I do not say most conservatives are stupid people, but most stupid people are certainly conservatives.”
