The announcement is missing mentioning that any content tagged aw NSFW will not be accessible from their app. This was one of the biggest points that made the API changes impracticable for app devs, charging a very significant amount of money for a reduced experience .

It does, to a degree.

One of the ways Lemmy sorts posts is by local. being on a bigger/busier instance will return more stuff there. Also ‘All’ will return stuff from communities that at least one person from your instance have subscribed, so same thing, more users more results.

Another thing to look for is instances position on defederating other communities, requirements for email/application, etc…

Ideally you will find a community that appeals to you.

I picked lemmy.fmhy.ml without knowing much. I did so because they allowed NSFW without being a NSFW community. I couldn’t be happier with my decision

If you decide to ‘train’ with fan fiction, you can give wattpad a try to publish your stories and see how people like them

If you enjoy it, you absolutely should.

If you think you may want to publish a book, there are also a ton of resources (free) online to help you write properly. World and character creation, style, etc… It’s very different to write just to enjoy putting your ideas down, than actually building a novel or screenplay.
