I got into a mild accident last week; after being checked out, i don’t have anything broken but i have torn ligaments in one of my feet. My recovery has mostly been resting my foot and not putting pressure on; i’m not allowed to go for a walk. Would I be able to go swimming? This way I can keep my foot from being stiff but i can do some exercise.

Maybe avoid serious lap swimming, but gentle activities in the water should be fine as long as your doc hasn’t told you to immobilize it, you have no open stitches, and you’re not supposed to be non-weightbearing. If you’re supposed to be non-weight bearing, that’s going to be difficult to do in the water and you shouldn’t risk it. Remember that you also have to get in and out of the pool. And yes, like others said, a quick call to your doc would be good.

The more you move it around, the longer it will take to fully heal. If you were to immobilize the joint with an athletic wrap/tape, it would probably be fine. Without that, I’d imagine it would be hard to keep it from moving while swimming.

Definitely don’t do it if it hurts.

You could try swimming, but only using your arms to get some exercise. Go easy
