Are there any communities you’ve not yet seen on kbin that you used to visit on Reddit?
Edit: So a lot of people don’t know this, you can search for magazines on kbin here - https://kbin.social/magazines
I think the biggest problem I have is that the magazines exist but have little to no activity.
I and a few other posted in /m/motorcycles but I don’t think there’s been any activity since.
Yeah very true, I think the main reason for this is the ratio of lurkers to contributors has always been so high. So until mags start getting more subscribers things might stay that way.
Although, I’ve found there was no InternetIsBeautiful mag so I went ahead and made it and have started to post on it when I can, attempting to drive some traffic to it and start some discussions at the very least.
I think we’ll need to be the change we want to see and just start posting and commenting as much as possible!
Since Lemmy and Kbin are federating now, maybe you’ll find something in line with what you’re looking for, like maybe https://lemmy.world/c/motorcycles would work for you. :)
Edit: As per notation, [email protected] or @[email protected] should be better formatting.
Interesting, that community doesn’t show anything when I browse to it from kbin.
What I’m doing is clicking the magazines button at the top of the kbin page and searching for motorcycles. I see kbin.social/m/motorcycles which is where I’ve posted and commented. At the end of the search list I see the lemmy.world/c/motorcycles community, but it shows no activity and only 1 subscriber. When I click on it, I get a message saying “The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.”
When I click the link to browse more, it takes me to the actual lemmy.world page where there is a bit of content and I can see that there are roughly 250 subscribers.
Maybe I’m not understanding how federation works, because I was under the impression that I was supposed to be able to interact with communities from lemmy.world (or other federated instances) from within kbin.social. I must be missing something and I consider myself somewhat technical so I imagine this is extra confusing for someone non-technical.
Things have been hit and miss for the last day or so in terms of viewing other communities on other instances. You may find that in a few hours it’s showing posts when browsing from kbin, I’m seeing other ones that were empty now starting to show posts and comments.
Maybe there are issues with the data being synced back and forth not happening as expected and what I’m observing is unintended behavior.
I’m quite new to all of this so don’t take my word as gospel but I agree with you. Earnest, the ‘admin’ of this instance has said he’s working on getting the stability of kbin taken care of so it’s only going to get better as time passes.
It’s having an explosion of new users, magazine creation and general activity so it’s probably going to take some time to catch up and upgrade accordingly.
Hey I’m new too! We’re all figuring this out together, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
It works from kbin if you remove the exclamation mark https://kbin.social/m/[email protected]. Still a bit glitchy and it’s not fully populated since the first visit from kbin was only 2 hours ago.
I would prefer if you use the format of @[email protected]. I wish there was a way to do links like that universally
Sorry, I’m very new to Lemmy and I was also posting from a mobile app so I just pulled the community. I’m not fully versed on the difference between how kbin communities name their short name versus Lemmy and I was pretty sure the ! didn’t work but I didn’t know it was @
I’ll store that away for the next time.
Discoverability is lacking atm. But I’m linking people to subs they seem to be looking for, and helping find the places people are looking for will eventually lead to better and better engagement.
Certain magazines/communities are already very active, and finding good threads, if not specific ones, hasn’t been hard.
But a lot of them have only just been started, so even with the users on, they havent been found and subbed to, yet.
I miss all my hobby and crafting subreddits lol. Off the top of my head,
Woodworking / Beginners
Sewing / Knitting
Dioramas / Terrain Building
Painting
Survival / Preppers / Camping / OneBag / TravelNot trying to out myself, but I don’t see my Country / Region / City here yet.
Wouldn’t mind some health, lifestyle, and research science.
Can we get AskHistorians on here??
I miss some of those, too. OneBag exists, but it won’t be useful till people start to really participate.
Remember that you are people too!
When things are just getting off the ground, the more folks that participate, the better. If things are to flourish it’s going to require participation from everyone and not just lurking. ;)

If you go up top to Magazines you can search by keyword, which is how I found these.
There are currently some duplicate communities across instances; over time people will settle into one or the other. You can subscribe to any of them, or just the most active one.
AskHistorians will likely need to have a dedicated instance (for verification) and more robust mod tooling than currently exists. It may be a while.
Woah okay! I’d been procrastinating the effort to search across the fediverse, but you’ve put in some work here! Thank you!
I’ll honour your efforts by at least going through these and actually subscribing to them lmao.
I kind of miss DIWHY, always some good nonsense on there.
Dundermifflin!!
Combatfootage, NCD, gundeals, and liberalgunowners.
Awesome, thanks!
I also second combat footage and the ukraine war subreddits as well.
While I spent the most time on /r/fantasy, I miss /r/vexillologycirclejerk the most by far
The circlejerk subreddits deserve an entire fediverse instance of their own. Not as a bad thing, but it will concentrate the expertise of meme development in a coherent place that encourages it.
new instance just dropped
no but seriously, I’m not sure if I agree with this. I really enjoyed seeing a post on either /r/vexillology or /r/vcj and then its corresponding post on the other one, especially if it was on /r/vcj first and then trying to figure out where tf it came from. And similar idea with /r/mapporncirclejerk and /r/geography. I think it would be a very different place if it were an entire instance dedicated to memes, and they’d lose their own identity to a large extent (not that they’re not all invaded by /r/anarchychess already).
Is there no alternative to r/fantasy here? I’ve been able to find so many books and get many recommendations from there :(
Mountain biking
Retroid, or some magazine focused on handheld emulator devices in general.
more fitness and sports related ones
I just created a LesMills magazine in case you’re interested
A handful off the top of my head (not sure if these sub names are case-sensitive in any way or not):
QAnonCasualties
PeopleofWalmart
Engrish
Spokane (the city in WA)
Seattle
Boston
AntifascistsofReddit
Scala
Fsharp
fatlogicI didn’t think to save my subscription list (duh) and I’ll be damned if I’m going to log in again to do so. I’m done with Reddit at least until they fire that absolute ass of a CEO and back off on all of his dumbshit money-grubbing schemes. That means ‘probably never’ and I’m 100% fine with that, fuck them and a hearty hello to the fediverse.
KitchenConfidential
Subreddit names on Reddit are not case sensitive, but magazine names on kbin are. I’m not sure about Lemmy, but I believe they are case sensitive as well.
Kbin has an open pull request to fix the case sensitivity IIRC.
The main focus of the past couple days has just been trying to stop the site from collapsing. ;)

Subscribe to all of them, or just the ones which are just the most active.
Over time people will choose one and that’ll be the primary one (just like /r/gaming vs /r/Games). The most active are https://kbin.social/m/[email protected] and https://kbin.social/m/[email protected].
I’d love to see r/Marvel and r/DCcomics move over. Maybe some of the smaller ones I follow like r/dreamcast. But it’ll take awhile I suppose.
Yooooooo thanks!
IdiotsInCars
Id love to have aviation related magazines. Also metalmemes or memes in general. Computerscience and programming would also be great. The problem is that im not too happy about the tankie infestation of lemmy an thus I try not to interact with it too much…
@AngryRoomba https://kbin.social/m/Aviation is not much active yet
I miss r/gardening, r/zero waste, multiple subs about the war in Ukraine and some funny ones like AITA
Legend, thank you. I just realised I can scroll to the bottom of kbin and click all magazines. This help me find some of my Reddit favourites too. Thanks for your help.
I submitted some roses questions to https://kbin.social/m/Plants and https://kbin.social/m/gardening I have gotten a few responses but nothing like I got from Minnesota gardening back on reddit.
Thanks for the links
