Tarptent on Instagram: "Introducing our first three Ultra Series tents! We started working with @challengesailcloth at the start of 2022 to develop tents made from their brand-new Ultra TNT laminate. After many updates to the fabric and endless prototypes, we are excited to announce our first three Ultra Series tents. These tents are the StratoSpire Ultra, Double Rainbow DW Ultra, and Scarp 1 Ultra. The StratoSpire Ultra will be available in late August and the Scarp 1 Ultra and DRDW Ultra will be available in early September. We will also be showing samples at PCT days. If you do not already know about Ultra TNT we recommend reading up about it on our ‘Buyers Guide’ page and/or on Challenge Sailcloth’s website (https://www.challenge-outdoor.com/ultra-tnt) The TLDR is that it is a ~1oz laminate most comparable to 1oz DCF, but with thicker more widely spaced UHMWPE fibers. One of its key differences is that it has these fibers along three directions instead of just two as in DCF giving it greater dimensional stability. It is also less expensive than DCF so we are happy to be able to price these tents significantly lower than our DCF ‘Lithium’ series. Full specs/features/pricing are available on our website, but some of the key points are below*: StratoSpire Ultra: Based on the StratoSpire Li but increased in size to give a 53” x 90” floor, more vestibule space, and a lower fly edge. Double Rainbow DW Ultra: The same geometry and features as the current Double Rainbow DW, just much stronger and slightly lighter. Scarp 1 Ultra: The Scarp 1 Ultra also has the exact same geometry and features as the current Scarp 1 but is much stronger and a bit lighter.     In our testing, Ultra TNT matches or outperforms 1oz/yd DCF in most ways. The biggest performance advantage of Ultra TNT is that the fabric is stabilized by UHMWPE fibers in three directions instead of just two. This means Ultra TNT is more dimensionally stable than DCF which decreases the amount of deformation of the fabric under load. This superior stability reduces the strain on the Mylar films increasing durability along with making the fabric extremely rigid when well pitched. The coloration of Ultra TNT is also more opaque than DCF, meaning more privacy inside.

    The other benefit of Ultra TNT is cost. At roughly half the price of DCF, Ultra TNT is not only better performing in many ways but also leads to much more affordable tents.

    Their tents are ingenious and bombproof. My original StratoSpire is still going strong, surviving 40mph winds, overnight snowstorms, and miles of jostling around my pack. Roomy enough for 2 adults (plus a dog in a pinch) yet packs down into the same size as my quilt.

      Agreed! I used an Aeon Li briefly on the PCT and it was roomy, sturdy and a marvel of engineering. I sold it because I thought it was actually overkill and got a tarp, but I was very impressed with the product.
