A national industry group representing gas producers is quietly paying for digital advertisements urging Canadians to “speak up” to their elected officials against laws addressing climate change and public health, DeSmog can reveal.
“Voice of Energy” is a new ad campaign and website featuring photos of diverse and well-dressed young people, explainers making the case for natural gas while downplaying its massive contribution to climate change, and videos urging viewers to join in an effort to “protect” the fossil fuel against laws restricting new gas hookups in buildings. Voice of Energy’s website does not disclose who created and paid for the campaign. Nor does its Facebook, X, LinkedIn and Instagram pages. But when DeSmog searched Google’s Ads Transparency Center, it found that nearly a dozen digital “Voice for Energy” advertisements have been paid for by CGA Enterprises, a venture of the Canadian Gas Association.
The industry group’s board members include representatives from pipeline companies such as Enbridge, as well as TC Energy, the builder of the Coastal GasLink pipeline in northern British Columbia.
This type of shit should be illegal. Nothing quite like corporate interests spreading information that’s meant to mislead and obfuscate.
Worst part is political parties do it as well.
If this is such a “good” idea, why not put their company names on the ad?
Your reminder that the “Canadian” O&G industry is dominated by foreign interests. From the looks of it, the Canadian Gas Association is filled by members of Canadian enterprises, but when you consider how much of the market that group controls, it quickly becomes clear that they are acting as compradors facilitating the extraction of our resources for the benefit of foreign entities.
Shocker.
Canada is three monopolies in a trench coat, any money you don’t pay as taxes goes to the energy sector, telecoms or groceries. And no party is interested in changing this.
What you’re telling me that the corporations that have been opposing climate laws since the beginning of their existence are still opposing climate laws?
The only weapon against this ignorance is to educate the public.
Putting this out there, because it seems like kids that watched the commercial grew up to forget all about it:
Not sure why you put this in a disinformation post, I loved my house hippo growing up!
Yeah same idk what this guy is on about. I used to sneak out at night to watch the house hippos feast in my pantry.
This title is terribly unclear.
Frustrating ain’t it! I see the sign defending LGN when I’m leaving my town.
