Apparently in some parts of the world it’s already Monday June 12th. I see registrations going up.
This results in the server CPU staying around 70% even spiking over 90%. So I will upgrade the VPS from 4cpu/16GB to 8cpu/32GB.
Expect a few minutes downtime at 17:00 CET
Restart is done. Enjoy!
What is the plan when the new VPS gets overloaded in a few hours? What happens if this instance becomes popular and has 50k users a day?
Then I move it to a dedicated server, like I did with mastodon.world which has 164k users and had over 100k active users at it’s peak.
How is the funding? Do you need help? Will this be a long term project?
Funding is still OK but we might need to upgrade the server again soon. Links for funding are on the homepage sidebar. I don’t quit this server as long as it’s used. If I ever get tired of it I hand it over.
I was thinking of starting my own server first and host it on hetzner or digitalocean because I have good experience with those and they’re easy to scale. Anyway I’m here now and it’s better to see this one grow :) If I can help in any way let me know.
Awesome :) glad to see this instance has some staying power!
Oh, you know what you’re doing, then! Awesome.
“50k users a day”
LMAO you’re funny.
wow that was fast, nice!
Thanks Ruud!
It’s still slow af. takes me 45 seconds to save edit to this post What’s the plan to fund scaling? You should probably have some burstable resources set up with a hyperscaler cloud.
Some world event will happen and this site will break down faster than toilet paper in the rain
this
siteinstanceFtfy ;)
You got a point though, just made an account myself and I’m not used to looking at a spinning icon for 5 seconds just to post a comment. I dont even think my last two comments even posted lol… could be the app I’m using. Let’s hope this one posts and doesn’t timeout??
Thanks!
Thank you!
Just want to say thank you for your hard work and dedication
Thanks for maintaining this - I’m a Reddit refugee and this instance has been great so far!
Technical issues are very understandable when you’re growing this fast :)
The exodus has definitely begun. For anyone who hasn’t seen it you can literally watch Reddit go dark one sub at a time at https://reddark.untone.uk
Been watching this thinking “WOW the Reddit-ocalypse is happening!!!” Then the site went down. 698 sites had went dark when I last checked.
He’s struggling to get the site to stay up under the demand but is streaming his local version here https://www.twitch.tv/reddark_247
This is awesome and hiarious
Neat link, thanks!
Congrats on all the registrations! Glad to see this catching on. :)
Your professionalism and experience is part of why I decided to make this my “home” instance. Thanks for all the work keeping this up and stable over the last few days!
Man, I just ended up here by pure chance, I guess I’m lucky :)
Am I tripping or is everything a bit snappier now? ^^
Edit: on the other hand, commenting does still take quite a bit 🫠
Yeah I can’t yet find the cause of that, it’s annoying the *** out of me
Oh good. I thought it was just me and I was taking crazy pills.
Do you pay for the server, how much do you pay monthly?
Also: how can people help support?
Yeah it’s June 12th already in New Zealand and probably a few other countries, I’ve seen a few saying they were shutting down their subreddits because of that.
For anyone interested to see subs while they shutdown: https://reddark.untone.uk/
p.s. Thank you for your work! :)
Thank you for all you do
Hi, new user here… Thanks for hosting this. I hope the server wouldn’t blow up due to users spike… cheers!
Is there a web site that we can see the status of the servers/instances, number of users, stuff like that. It’ll be an interesting couple of days with all the new communities going up. Good luck
https://fediverse.observer/list (choose Lemmy in Software) or https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy
Thank you for hosting this!
thanks for the hard work!
I did my very first account login right as this happened and was very confused haha. But now working smoothly and excited to figure this all out!
Thanks for the solid maintenance Ruud!
