We loaded up the Hunter 170 today to see how she would sail when loaded down with camping gear in preparation for next weekend’s trip to the Apostle Islands.
My wife is still a bit nervous, but feeling much more confident after today. Please ignore the watering can. She wanted to put a bit more weight onboard just in case.
How’d she handle?
Slow and doggy, but I’m thinking thats more to do with the wind the the gear. We only had about 3 kts. Its going to be more like 6 with gusts up to 15 so it should be a bit better providing we don’t get stuck in the 28kt gusts predicted for Sunday afternoon.
I’ve been thinking I’m a few dry bags away from doing something like this on my hobie. Are you gunna sleep in the cockpit or bringing a tent?
We ended up bringing a tent. The mosquitoes are bad where I am so sleeping in the cockpit would’ve been rough lol.
How big is your Hobie? There’s a 16ft that goes out into the Apostles on YouTube and it looks like a blast.
Good luck on your trip!
I got an 18, been toying with the idea of some kind of tarp over the boom to act as a tent.
How much total weight in gear is that? Doesn’t look too bad
I’m estimating around 250, but I could be off. There’s about 5 gallons of gas and a small 5hp outboard that’s making up the bulk of that weight missing from this picture.
