Interesting read. Since he likely knows a lot of these teams, nothing is stopping him emailing them gift cards.
I’m sure they got their year-end bonus of a half-spent $25 starbucks gift card.
Sure, tip the company that just canceled a multiple year project and awarded everyone with a layoff
Sounds like American rich-man-talk.
Tipping is so integral of the American culture that consumers feel obliged to tip even when they dont need to!
That used to be what tipping was. Receiving a service so profoundly above average that it warranted an above average expense.
The last “above average” thing Blizzard made was Overwatch and they killed it to sell it twice.
We don’t even know when you are or aren’t supposed to tip anymore because everyone has a tip jar.
Order groceries online for store pickup. Do I tip the person who brought out the order?
Get a carryout pizza from Domino’s. Do you tip the guy behind the counter that handed you the box?
I hate how often this question must be asked.
I never tip ever, but I’m Australian
Hmm. Maybe a donation to their respective union funds?
Ah yes, we must spread tipping culture to all facets of life, clearly.
There are other ways of showing appreciation than throwing money at people. The problem is their livelihood is dependent on that kind of financial gratitude because of the actions of you and your ilk, Mr. Ybarra.
Here’s an idea: convince your rich buddies to give the employees a raise out of the shareholders’ cut.
Your tip is “make another game and I’ll buy it because the last one was good”.
I bought your product and you want me to pay extra because it lived up to what it promised?
You want me to pay someone more for simply doing their job? If you aren’t paying them enough, that they needs tips to survive, that seems like an employer underpaying. If it’s tip or I fuck with your food or chase you down in the street… Then that’s extortion.
“But with proper wages instead of tips the cost goes up.” THE COST IS ALREADY UP BECAUSE OF THE TIP YOU IDIOT, except it isn’t standardised or garunteed.
“But if there is no tips to incentivise people they won’t give good service.” What ever happened to do your job, get paid. Fuck it up and get fired.?
All it does is introduces stress between customer and staff. And causes a sense of entitlement to tips for things that don’t need it at all. Why the fuck is a self-checkour machine asking for a tip!?
A tip should be for EXCEPTIONAL service. Not for the bare minimum.
Tipping culture can get fucked in the ass with a sideways chair.

For an indie game that I bought cheap (maybe even on sale), I do sometimes feel that the price was way too low for the game and I’d appreciate a easy way support the dev/studio a bit further. For AAA $70+ titles? Nope, not gonna happen.
What’s up with this guy? Was he told “f u pay me” too often by his developers, that he took this phrase and found a new meaning for it?
I’ve bought slay the spire, factorio, binding of Issac, etc as gifts to friends as a ty for a great game. Dev gets their cut, friends get a good game. Win, win.
I only read the headline but if this is Bobby Kotick, he’s just an all around piece of shit. He created a work environment so misogynist that multiple former employees described it as being like a frat, and a woman had her breast milk stolen from the employee fridge while the company did nothing.
Video game landlords have arrived.
$10-20 once, to the whole company, instead of raises when he was still president.
Ah yes. In the future you’ll have to pay more than $70, because you need to tip the devs so they can get paid. What’s that? Not happy enough with the game? No pay for the team behind it then. It’s only fair.
Everyone : If you want to give them more how about paying them better while the game is in development? Former Blizzard president : No, not like that.
Id happily pirate many games and tip just the devs
No, he wants to put the responsibility of paying his employees onto the consumer. That’s why restaurants want tipping, so they can pay their employees less and push the cost onto the customers.
“Please pay my employees for me”
Workers should own the businesses they work for.
He could fucking tip his employees instead of laying them off.
They can’t pay people fairly because they stole all the profits, is what he’s saying out loud.
yeah thats called microtransactions and cosmetics.
pls stop already.
Only banning that business model will work.
Nothing inside a video game should cost real money.
You can’t pay me to play new blizzard games
