The Iowa high school principal who was shot and wounded while trying to protect his students during a school shooting earlier this month has died from his injuries, according to the school district.

Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger was among seven people injured in the Jan. 4 shooting. One student, 11-year-old sixth grader Ahmir Jolliff, was killed, authorities said.

The suspected shooter – a student at the high school – died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Because it’s so common it’s hardly even news worthy. School shootings are just a very common occurrence here.

This is so sick and I hate myself for thinking this, but-

We took my daughter out of school last year and put her in online school because she was being severely bullied.

And after we did it, one of my first thoughts was, “well, at least she won’t be in a school shooting.”

I know it’s still rare even though it happens in the U.S. more than anywhere else, but it still scares me.

rightly so. the government is failing to protect its citizens from easily preventable dangers.

as long as politicians get kickbacks from munition sales, nothing will change.

We’re a small town, I’m not really surprised. But be happy you don’t have to hear all of the conspiracy theories about the shooting that happened a mile from you, its maddening.

After people went through his social media, there were hints he may have been leaning towards coming out as trans. News then went quiet about this one.

His daughter said he tried to talk the shooter down while protecting others. Chokes me up as a fellow Iowa teacher. I identify with that so much. Never met him, but I respect the hell out of him.

Real heroes never look like what you expect.

I think there was a whole fucking trilogy of movies based on a trilogy of books based on the authors experiences in World War I about how heroes are who you wouldn’t expect.

WWI. Our boy was busy writing while Europe was on fire during WWII. Like the Hobbit, he wrote the book (at least partially) for his son:

Tolkien abandoned The Lord of the Rings during most of 1943 and only restarted it in April 1944 as a serial for his son Christopher Tolkien, who was sent chapters as they were written while he was serving in South Africa with the Royal Air Force.

As a dad, I fuckin feel that.

Yeah, he and CS Lewis (Inklings) both wrote about WWII as it was happening, but their actual service was in WWI when they were much younger. I found it interesting that C.S. Lewis, as an Irishman, was not required to fight, but he literally volunteered.

Thanks for the catch on the wrong war.

If I recall correctly, Kurt Vonnegut attributed his writings about war to wanting to teach his children that it was the worst thing in the world.

I could totally see samwise and Frodo in Valinor doing the Grumpy Old Men thing

“you had the ring for like a day. Who carried it all the way up the mountain?”

Well, yes. The heroes are generally the average people who don’t do stuff for attention. The “pretty” ones who dress themselves up and try to get media attention are generally the villains.

    What a fucking hero.

For all the shit we give high school principals while we’re in school, they usually really care about the kids.

My high school principal was actually a surprisingly decent guy. He let my girlfriend (now wife) put on a Christopher Durang play. Christopher Durang plays usually have gay themes, including the one she put on. But he thought it was really funny and he let her do it.

    This was in the 1990s.

I still gave him shit, but I feel bad about it now.

My guess would be that GoFundMe is being used to fund his healthcare expenses since we apparently can’t just have that free at the point of service like the rest of the civilized world.

Read the room dammit. The guy was an American as well.

This is the tragic story of an American, trying to be a hero, arguably succeeding who knows how many other people would have died, however long that guy took.
