A great read on what’s happening to the social platforms around us.

“ Even the most locked-in user eventually reaches a breaking-point and walks away, or gets pushed.”

Bang on. This is why I’m here (and lots of others now), because Reddit is enshitifying.

Also, this is a dope sentence: “ The emphasis of lawmakers and policymakers shouldn’t be preserving the crepuscular senescence of dying platforms.”

I had to look up the big words but they made my day.

I’ve been here for a couple of days now and it seems like this could actually replace Reddit fairly soon. We don’t need the vast majority of Reddit users here to be good. We only need a small fraction and that’s likely going to be the fraction that’s on the more thinking side of the spectrum.

I’ve personally noticed a massive difference from the communication here vs Reddit…it’s great here. It gives IRC vibes from back in the day with being able to actually have discussions that don’t devolve into slander/abuse for literally no reason. Much better here, for now. I say for now as nothing remains good once it gains popularity. Reddit was great too, then Facebook started melting and the masses migrated…

The communication on here is great right now, I agree. I joined Reddit in 2013 and the current situation kind of reminds me how it was there at that time.

Excellent read, thank you for sharing! I have deleted all my socials except for discord and Facebook, and holy shit Facebook is so bad now. I dont have the app, and I pretty much always stay away from my wall. I just use it for messenger, because they’re right. Everyone has it and its too hard to get them off it.

I’m sure I’m not the only one in this boat, but Facebook is just about the only way I can communicate with most of my family right now. They don’t really use email, and other social media is FAR beyond their technical capabilities. I don’t understand why this is, but it is the case nonetheless.

On the topic of staying on Facebook for Messenger, I’ve taken the stance that asks ‘why is it up to me to use a proprietary and ad-driven service to stay in touch but others’ refusal to email is tolerated.’ My family has my email address, they can contact me if they want.
