The Calgary Green Line LRT project has undergone significant changes since its initial approval in 2017. Originally planned as a 20-kilometre line costing $4.65 billion, the project has faced delays and cost increases. After multiple revisions, including changing from a tunnel to a bridge over the Bow River, the current plan approved in July 2024 is for a downsized 10-kilometre Phase 1 at a cost of $6.248 billion. This shortened line, running from Eau Claire to Lynnwood/Millican, reflects budget constraints and inflation, with six planned stations cut. The city has increased its funding share to $2.9 billion, while also allocating $1.45 billion to other major projects including a new Flames arena, BMO Centre expansion, and Arts Commons building.
For that length, the price is out of this world high. I’d like a train but I’d also like solid gold toilet to shit on but I’ll never own one.
It’s been a shit show for sure, but we do need this line for the future of Calgary. More-so than the new arena.
That arena deal… Boy oh boy. City council needs a great big cull next election. What really makes me sad is that Sonya Sharp was that committee. She’s not even my councillor but I think she’ll make a run for mayor next election and her leading that committee makes me think twice about voting her mayor. Annnnnnyways… All this shit makes me want to move into the country more and more. I’m getting sick of cities.
The Flames likely threatened to leave, but I think most people would have liked council to stand their ground and not give into billion dollar blackmail.
